The Chocolate Block is a bold South African red blend from Swartland, made primarily from Syrah, with Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Viognier. The nose is rich and intense with notes of dark berries, black olives, spice, and white pepper. The palate is juicy, medium to full-bodied, showing dark fruit, red cherry, liquorice, and hints of cherry tobacco. The wine is balanced and elegant, with smooth tannins and a long, dry finish

Harvest: 2022

Composition: Syrah 74%; Grenache 10%; Cinsault 8%; Cabernet Sauvignon 7%; Viognier 1%

Vineyard

Syrah dominates the blend, accounting for 74%. Grenache (10%) from bush vines on Porseleinberg is the quiet star of the blend, offering pure fruit brightness and texture. Extended aging has allowed the elegant Swartland Cabernet Sauvignon (7%) to emerge. The 2022 vintage, although somewhat more mature, shows balanced alcohol content and good natural acidity, which should develop very well in the coming years.

Food pairing

Definitely goes well with red meat, spicy meats or stews. Also very good with grilled chicken, pasta and pizza.

Boekenhoutskloof was founded in 1776. The name of the farm, located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, means "Boekenhout Gorge" - Boekenhout is a native Cape beech that is highly prized for furniture making. In 1993 the farm and estate was purchased and restored and a programme of planting new vineyards was established.
